The Ongoing Marketing Escapades of Duncan Whitmore
This week, I have been busy setting up a brand new traffic generation strategy.
Once done, it should provide endless reams of high-quality, set-and-forget traffic.
And if it produces results, I promise you'll be the first to know!
On the plus side, it hasn't consumed a lot of money - just a few dollars here and there on upgrades that will turbocharge some of the programs involved.
The time it is taking, however, is another story.
In fact, I'm still not done and will likely have to continue over the weekend.
Anyhow, all of this work I've been doing got me thinking:
This is not a push-button strategy.
Yes, I should get great results eventually.
But to reach that point, I am nose-to-grindstone.
In the so-called "Make Money Online" (MMO) niche, too many people want something for nothing.
They leap from offer to offer in search of an automatic money machine.
"Plug in it, and cash will rain down from heaven!"
My mentor, John Thornhill, calls this the "shiny object syndrome".
I call it the "holy grail syndrome".
However you wish to refer to it, succumbing to this syndrome ends up in one of two outcomes:
1) Either you waste your money on garbage programs that don't work, OR
2) You buy good programs but lose interest as soon as you realize there is effort involved.
"That isn't the life I dream of!" you cry in despair.
The truth is that no such push-button program exists.
This is not because no one has bothered to build one.
Plenty have tried - the affiliate networks are littered with such promises.
The real reason is because it is impossible to build such a program.
"But why?" you might ask.
Well, it's simple.
If you could press a button to generate cash on demand, then, guess what:
So could your customers!
If your customers could just push a button to make cash on demand, then what exactly would they need to pay you for?
You would be a redundant step - a needless cog in an otherwise efficient machine.
Making money in any business means that you have to create value for the people whom you serve.
And you can only create value by doing work.
Now, this doesn't mean that you'll never reach the point at which your business pretty much runs itself.
Once you have a lot of traffic sources bringing in leads to your offers, you can make passive income.
Once you have built up a large and/or responsive email list, you can send one or two emails to draw in several thousand dollars worth of commissions.
Once you have a lot of connections in the industry, you will get the best commission rates, and premium access to the latest hot products in your niche.
But getting to that point requires effort.
The good news is that ridding yourself of the "holy grail syndrome" will, in an instant, put you ahead of 95% of people in this niche - may be more.
And don't think you have to burn the midnight oil.
Even if you can devote only an hour a day to your business, you are getting closer to your goal.
Given time, those hours will add up to significant amounts of progress.
Everyone else, meanwhile, is eating dust.
So, now is the time to rid yourself of any illusions and get on with the nitty-gritty of building your online business.
That is the only way in which you will achieve the lifestyle you dream of.

I mentioned my mentor, John Thornhill in this post. If you are an action-taker, then John's personal coaching program has generated more than $23 million for his students. And it is currently available at a very attractive price:
